Ottawa, the capital city of Canada, has a history rooted in Indigenous presence and strategic colonial development. The area along the Ottawa River was long inhabited by Algonquin peoples before European settlement. In 1826, Lieutenant Colonel John By established the settlement of Bytown to support construction of the Rideau Canal, a vital military and commercial waterway linking the Ottawa River to Lake Ontario. The canal’s completion in 1832 spurred growth, and in 1855 Bytown was incorporated as the city of Ottawa. Queen Victoria selected Ottawa as the permanent capital of the Province of Canada in 1857, a decision confirmed at Confederation in 1867 when it became the capital of the new Dominion of Canada. The late 19th and early 20th centuries brought expansion driven by the timber trade, government institutions, and the construction of Parliament Hill. Today Ottawa is known for its national landmarks, including the Parliament Buildings and the Rideau Canal (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), its bilingual character, vibrant cultural festivals, strong federal government and tech sectors, and high quality of life, making it a central symbol of Canadian identity and governance.
